Director/animator Stephen Brandt has created a pilot for a series called “Irony Farms,” which features voices of Terry & David Gau, Brett Ambler and David Vinson.  It wasn’t created for any particular outlet, but has already been submitted to some networks, as well as film festivals, including Artscape in Baltimore next month.  It’s made up of short sketches that center around various social ironies (preview on his website soon).

Tango Down Productions is seeking cast and crew (including makeup FX) for this year’s 48 Hour Film Project.  No pay, but meals and a copy of the final product. Contact Chuck Paschal.

“Peep This!,” a series of short documentaries produced by Richmond area youth, will premiere 7/12, 2pm at the Byrd Theatre. Contact Cynthia Newbille for details. It’s produced by the East District Family Resource Center and the VCU Department of African American Studies.

The next meeting of the Virginia Production Alliance will be a combo of the Richmond and Hampton Roads Chapters, 7/7 6-8 at 37th and ZEN in Norfolk.

The Hampton Roads chapter has been busy interviewing local crew and talent. Warning, they’re print, NOT Video.

Digital Video Group has updated their website (actually, Steve Bishop of Rare has). It now features links to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube videos of seminars.

Even more website news: the VPA now has adjusted their Facebook presence from a Group to a page.

Speaking of websites (a more busy one), The Lincoln Studio is offering a free introductory course on The Fundamentals of Basic Screenwriting.

Those of you who were around in the 90s will certainly remember Christine Offutt. She’s showing up in small glimpses on the new reality show starring Denise Richards. “Chrissy” (in big glasses and brown hair) is Denise’s assistant.

There’s a Meet-N-Greet for everyone interested in this year’s 48 Hour Film Project on 6/30, 5 – 7 at the New York Deli (2920 West Cary). Filmmakers can meet their competition and find cast and crew. There’s also still room for teams to register (visit the website).

“Questioning the Constitution,” a documentary produced by WCVE PBS in partnership with Center for Politics at UVA, recently won The Communicator Award of Excellence in Documentary. It’s aired on 100+ PBS stations.

TVJerry is tweeting! Although I’ve personally been on Twitter for several months, I wasn’t using it to keep my “Tales” readers updated. That’s changing. From now on, when I get a news release, audition notice or other poop, I’ll tweet it immediately…with the full listing showing up here on Monday as usual. You may remember reading here last November about director Matt West, who knocked on my door and asked permission to shoot his film in front of my house. Well, the Super 35mm project and DP Mark Mervis got some ink recently in FujiFilm’s Exposure Magazine.

Jody Kielbasa has been named new director of the Virginia Film Festival. He comes from the University from Sarasota, FL, where he served as the founding executive director of the Sarasota Film Festival and he grew that event from a 3-day mini-festival to a 10-day event. He also recently co-produced “The Deal” (starring William H. Macy and Meg Ryan), which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. This year’s Virginia Festival is 11/5-8 with ‘Funny Business’ as the theme.

Casting VA is currently seeking extras for the Dolley Madison Project slated to start shooting this month in the area. All types and races are encouraged. Visit the website for details.

Joe Cacciotti ran for election on the Eastern AD/UPM Council of the Directors Guild of America and won! He’ll be one of 2 people representing Virginia (Alison Rosa from NOVA is the other).

Studio Squared (a subsidiary of The Martin Agency) is looking for a full-time motion graphics designer to create work for the Walmart Smart Network. AfterEffects and 3D expertise preferred. Contact Chad Alber.

Anybody who was in the Richmond biz in the late 70s/early 80s would remember voice talent Betsy Ames. She moved to DC in the mid-80s and died recently. Here’s the obit in the Washington Post.
